The concept explores the metaphor of breaking down the barrier of a school building wall. The wall evokes brickwork of the mid-century, and the title of the monument, “End of Massive Resistance,” uses signage typography of the same era.  The monument features a sculptural “de-materialization” or gradated transformation of conventional bricks to glass bricks.  The glass brick walls are etched or fritted with a timeline of historical photos related to the End of Massive Resistance. At night, the glass bricks are dramatically illuminated. The nature of the “brick wall” design provides an opportunity to present a timeline of milestone events. In this concept, the sunlight that penetrates the transparent walls becomes a powerful symbol of the triumph of social justice.Reinforcing this notion, changing sunlight projects the etched or fritted historical photos, awashing the plaza and visitors with imagery of the Civil Rights Movement. This poetically connects our own time with the meaningful events of the past.
