Spirit of East Aldine

Guadalupe Hernandez, Artist

This project aims to create a dynamic and culturally significant sculpture inspired by the artistic tradition of Papel Picado in Mexico. The sculpture serves as a prominent landmark, distinguishing the East Aldine Management District as a unique and captivating destination within the Houston area. By incorporating local cultural elements, the artwork contributes to the district's identity, establishing a strong sense of place that resonates with the community.

Taking inspiration from Papel Picado, Hernandez began this project by hand-cutting three designs that capture the rich culture and history of East Aldine, incorporating traditional motifs and patterns from Papel Picado. Stretching along the entire length of each side of the structure, these designs depict the past, present, and future vision of the region. To enhance the visual impact, the sculpture's surface is perforated, allowing an interplay of light and shadows during the day. As night falls, the sculpture is internally lit, illuminating the cut-out designs and its surroundings. Furthermore, the sculpture is painted in a vibrant fuchsia hue, ensuring its prominent visibility amidst the trees of Keith-Wiess Park. It serves as a symbol of the area's future development, beckoning visitors to explore and experience all that it has to offer.
