WHORL
RESite Studio, Artist
Whorl features a sculptural assemblage of industrial pipes that are “coped” artistically—cut on a diagonal—to reveal the interior of each pipe, which is painted with an ombre gradient of color based on sea life. The raw exterior of the pipes becomes a counterpoint to the ombre gradient of pipe interiors, creating a visual dialogue. The spiraling configuration of pipes is inspired by natural forms from the sea, such as seashells and ocean waves, as well as the tubular porosity of corals and sponges.
The coping technique also creates an articulated surface that evokes intersecting ripples on the water’s surface. This recalls St. Lucie’s connection to the sea and celebrates the city’s sense of community, dynamism, and growth. The roundabout sculpture creates a kinetic impression as viewers move around the work, as the interior color of the coped pipes reveal themselves. In this manner, the movement of viewers becomes part of the experience of the work itself. At night, integrated LED lighting in the base of the sculpture illuminates the interior volumes of the pipes with a dramatic vibrancy.
